Time To Make A Change!

One of the greatest challenges in life is that we are constantly giving away our power.

 

We give our power away at work, in relationships (both personal and business), with our families and certainly with the society in which we live.

 

The best way in which to regain our power is to constantly improve what we know and make a decision to reduce our ignorance in areas that are important to us.

 

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being ignorant… what it means is that at any one point in time we didn’t get the knowledge or information that we needed… to help us in this moment… because that is something we can ALWAYS change, (stupid on the other hand, is another matter :-)).

 

Our business and work lives are such an important part of who we are and the success we create for ourselves, yet we do very little to make the necessary changes to improve what we do and how we do it.

 

Instead of worrying about what is going on in the world and how little power we have, we need to take steps to change what we are doing so that we can guarantee our future successes in our job or business.

 

Making the right connections, learning to have great conversations and building powerful and profitable relationships is a great place to start.

Is Social Media Working For You?

One of the biggest challenges for the majority of businesses is the almost oppressive, time wasting inevitability of social media.

So called “Experts” would have us believe that you can use social media exclusively to deliver a significant ROI for our businesses.

I believe a lot of businesses are discovering that that is like building a house of matchsticks rather than a house of bricks and mortar to underpin a businesses success.

THINK ABOUT IT…

Old School Marketing (these figures are undisputed and have stood the test of time for over a hundred years).

For every 100 cold calls (email, letter (yes, snail mail), telemarketing etc…)

Are there internet millionaires… of course there are… but they represent only 0.001% of ALL internet marketers

Yet they spend a great deal of time conning people into believing that you can be one too… sorry folks… you have the same same odds of winning a first division prize in any of the ‘lotto’s” around the world.

Don’t get me wrong… I believe social media is important…

But all aspects of social media need to simply be treated as effective, strategic tools in a greater marketing strategy…

FACT!

Social media and its components now and in the future are here to stay.

We as businesses have a huge responsibility in finding a balance between social media use, traditional marketing implementation and appropriate time investment, for our success, because, our success will have a huge impact on our families and the communities around us.

We need to develop a balance between “old-world methodology and new-world technology”

Because without that balance… businesses will continue to fail, chasing social media “pipe-dreams”.

Truly… there is no such thing as a Social Media Expert…

The landscape continually changes so much and so fast… no one can keep up, so find what might work for you and work with someone who has had measurable success in your chosen social media niche.

For these “niche specialists” are the ones that can stay on top of the changes in their respective social media fields and translate that into successes for their clients.

A system – WHY?

Is Systemising a Business a Waste of Time?

We hear about systems ALL the time, yet for some reason, businesses fail to grasp the intrinsic importance of a good business system and continue to ignore the necessity of implementing even the most basic systems to their businesses.

 

Here are four points that I believe need to be considered and understood when thinking, talking about, designing or implementing a system.

1. Businesses need to learn that systems are about different processes within the operation of your business… they are not rules or policies or regulations that everyone in the business must follow (although some or all of these things could be part of your system).

Every business will need different systems for different processes within their operation.

For example… there needs to be a system for dealing with and entering receipts throughout the organisation on all expenditure that is generated by all relevant staff, I mean really… they are spending the company’s money after all.

If there is no system in place then anyone at any time can spend anything and before too long the company will have no money or worse find themselves in debt because they haven’t controlled their cash flow, their debts and their receipts.

As obvious as it sounds, a simple bookkeeping system is needed by ALL businesses to ensure that there is money in the bank and that the business is not operating insolvently. Yet many businesses do not have such a system in place.

 

 

2. Businesses need to plan for the systems they need… and the processes that they have.

As you can see bookkeeping is simply one system within an organisation, most businesses will need a system with regards to customer engagement, marketing, sales processes and product or service delivery, just to name a few.

As a person in business, you may need to start looking at your business as a process from beginning to end, and look at the different sections of your business that flow one into each other.

Once you are able to identify the flow of your business, then the processes will be a lot easier to identify and then you can engage professional to help to create the necessary systems you may need to simplify your operations.

 

3. Don’t leave your systems gathering dust.

One of the biggest challenges with most businesses is that even though they take the time to work out how their business flows and then they invest the time and the money in creating the appropriate systems, once the manuals are written they seem to sit on a shelf gathering dust.

I can admit this now, but once I was one of the biggest anti-system people in the business world. I played with systems, I saw organisations with systems and I even created a few in my time.

But I never applied them to my own endeavours and ended up wasting enormous amounts of time, energy AND money that should have been applied… or been invested in worthwhile systems… that could have been used to create greater efficiencies in time and energy.

Today… I leave the system design and implementation to others who are better equipped for it (some of my business associates for example). However, I now use these systems, because as I have discovered painfully… systems… good simple and effective systems, actually set a business person free to do what they do best.

They are quite simple to design and implement (by the right person)… but implement them one at a time… do not try to implement all your systems at the same time, this is a recipe for disaster.

REMEMBER, systems set you free, implement them one at a time and you will have created a successful business.

 

4. Kaizen (改善), Japanese for “improvement” or “change for the best”.

Kaizen was a development by the Japanese after William Edwards Deming who was an American statistician, professor, author, lecturer, and consultant set Japan on the path to industrial super stardom after the Second World War.

Where your business systems are concerned, you need to have at least an understand the basics of kaizen… making small improvements on an ongoing basis.

No system is perfect!

The systems you create today will need to be constantly tested, measured and improved on as your business grows and develops in its size and complexity.

If you check your systems on a regular basis you will find that making small, important improvements will be very easy as you have already created a culture using them within your organisation (the McDonald’s brothers and their kitchen designs, which were constantly tested and improved upon, revolutionised the fast food industry).

 

These are just four (4) simple steps to help you on your way to thinking of systems in a positive and engaging manner.

There is so much more you can learn and read… and you should… once you recognise the importance of systems in your business.

The Power of the Introduction.

Whether you are being introduced, or you are introducing someone, getting the introduction right makes all the difference in a presentation.

 

As a professional networker and speaker, I have had the opportunity to hear thousands of introductions over the years, some were for me, most for other presenters. The most common thing about all of these introductions was that the presenter, the MC, was not prepared and delivered a poor and inadequate introduction, and didn’t engage the audience.

 

Most speakers or presenters are not professionals, and poor introductions make their task of delivering an informative talk or a presentation to create action by persuading you to a particular point of view, very difficult.

 

Even professional speakers get “put off” by introductions that give inaccurate facts about them; getting their name wrong, (YES, this happens more often than you think); or they have to step up after an introduction where the introducer has delivered an “off-coloured” joke by way of introducing a speaker… these things can be very off-putting.

 

Now I know what you’re thinking… you’re thinking that that’s no big deal, what’s so important about an introduction.

 

My answer to you is… everything!

 

Whether you are addressing a networking function, your sales group, being an MC at an engagement or wedding or any number of opportunities for speaking engagements, an introduction is extremely important.

 

In fact, the introduction is a speech all its own. It may rarely be longer than a minute, but it serves to engage the audience with specific information about the topic to be presented, the qualifications and credentials of the speaker and give the audience the speakers correct name.

 

The introduction is designed to grab the audience’s attention and make them more receptive to the speakers talk and message.

 

The best and simplest way to create an awesome introduction is preparation.

 

Whether it’s for a Featured Presentation to a networking group, like NRG, Business Network International, BforB or Business Referral Exchange etc, or a presentation to your local Chamber of Commerce, or introducing a speaker at Rotary, Apex or Lions club, preparation is the key.

 

Follow this simple formula, and you can’t go wrong:

 

Always start your introduction by giving the exact topic of the speakers presentation. Find out from the Speaker, the name of their presentation.

Unfortunately, many speakers don’t give a lot of thought to topic names, however, this process always helps the speaker to create a more focused presentation when they are speaking to a specific topic.

 

  • Create a level of importance and relevance, let your audience know WHY the topic is important to them, what they will learn and what the benefit is to them in listening to the Speaker.
  • Next, make it about the Speaker. List their qualifications and credentials… keep this simple, accurate and not too long.
  • In the delivery of an introduction, remember to be enthusiastic. Your enthusiasm with a well-prepared introduction will do these important things:
  • Engage the audience and warm them to the presenter, and their topic.
  • Makes the presenter more comfortable and relaxed so that they can give a great presentation at the audience deserves.
  • And lastly, the hidden element… YOU as the introducer are looked on favourably as a professional who is thorough, enthusiastic and caring.

 

Remember, introductions are as important as the presentation itself. They can make or break a presentation.

Accuracy – Brevity – Enthusiasm.

These are the keys to an awesome introduction.
